& Juliet at Stephen Sondheim Theatre

Moving away from the previous known story of the Shakespearean play which was presented on stage around four hundred years prior, fans have distinguished the many changes that had been made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern musical based on the same lead character. Shakespeare’s original premise is centered around the tragic story that comes about because of rash decision-making and the blind passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic tale and instead pursues a more positive outlook by focusing on the endless possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her gang of friends, who journey to Paris and find their identities not just as individuals, but as strong women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes command of her husband’s story and alters the ending of his well-known classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while bringing in new and equally empowered women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the show is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent years, that symbolize the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading ladies throughout the show. Even the dresses worn by the production’s characters give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while presenting the contrast between the ongoing show and the previous classic by pairing Elizabethan clothing and iconography with today’s costume styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to celebrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This July’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it arrive in New York, where New York's Stephen Sondheim Theatre is proud to host this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Tuesday 1st July 2025. Known in the entire New York area by locals as the greatest venue for staged show's, Stephen Sondheim Theatre is a large theater with a huge seating capacity while having the most second to none architecture both inside and outside the venue.
