Moving away from the original plot of Romeo & Juliet which debuted live on stage approximately four hundred years prior, fans have discerned the many alterations that had been made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer musical based on the same lead character. Shakespeare’s original premise is centered around the tragic ending that takes place because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead embraces a more positive outlook by concentrating on the endless possibilities of life, even after such painful experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who head to Paris and come to realize their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes control of her husband’s plot and alters the ending of his well-known classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while welcoming new and equally talented women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the play is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent decades, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the women throughout the musical. Even the clothing worn by the show’s leading ladies give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while showing the contrast between the ongoing musical and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan attire and iconography with today’s attire styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to celebrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
