& Juliet at Stephen Sondheim Theatre

Set side by side with the original storyline of Shakespeare's creation which was presented live roughly four hundred years earlier, viewers have noted the many alterations that had been implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern musical based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original story revolves around the tragedy that transpires because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic tale and instead pursues a more positive outlook by concentrating on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such agonizing experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who make the trip to Paris to find their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes control of her husband’s story and alters the ending of his famous classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while introducing new and equally confident women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the show is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent years, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the show. Even the clothing worn by the play’s cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while highlighting the contrast between the new production and the previous classic by using Elizabethan fashion and iconography with today’s attire styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to symbolize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This November’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it brought to New York, where Stephen Sondheim Theatre of New York is proud to be hosting this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Sunday 30th November 2025.
