When compared to the former storyline of Shakespeare's creation which debuted live approximately four hundred years prior, fans have distinguished the many alterations that were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer production based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original plot is centered around the tragic story that transpires because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic story and instead pursues a more positive outlook by embracing on the endless possibilities of life, even after such traumatic experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her team of friends, who head to Paris to embrace their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes hold of her husband’s narrative and changes the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while recruiting new and equally confident women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the musical is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent years, that highlight the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the women throughout the production. Even the costumes worn by the musical’s cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while emphasizing the contrast between the new production and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan dresses and iconography with today’s dress styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out to illustrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
