Moving away from the former storyline of Romeo & Juliet which was shown live roughly four centuries prior, critics have noted the many alterations which were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more recent production based on the same lead character. Shakespeare’s original drama revolves around the tragic story that transpires because of rash decision-making and the blind passion of two lovers, which results in the poisoning of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic ending and instead chooses a more positive outlook by focusing on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her gang of friends, who head to Paris to come to realize their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes command of her husband’s account and changes the ending of his popular classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while introducing new and equally powerful women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the play is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent generations, that encapsulate the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the musical. Even the dresses worn by the play’s ladies give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while emphasizing the contrast between the new production and the previous classic by using Elizabethan fashion and iconography with today’s fashion styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out to illustrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This December’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it brought to New York, where Stephen Sondheim Theatre of New York is proud to host this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Wednesday 3rd December 2025.
