Mrs. Doubtfire – The Musical [CANCELLED] at Stephen Sondheim Theatre

Hot off of a sell-out run at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre, Mrs. Doubtfire the musical is ready to take Broadway by storm. With a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell and music and lyrics written by Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick, this play has the makings of a true Broadway success story. If you have watched the original 1993 film, then you know that the story follows Daniel HIllard, a father desperate to do what it takes to remain close to his children, while struggling with a double identity and a hunt for a job. But this play does more than just recreate the original story as it has been especially adapted for Broadway productions. Songs carry the day from scene to scene with an opening that hooks audiences in with the promise of a funny and mesmerising tale. But the real stand out from this performance is Rob McClure’s portrayal of both Daniel Hillard and the titular Mrs Doubtfire. He manages to take the fundamentals of the characters, as established by Robin Williams, and make them his own. This is more than a retelling, it’s a fresh new Mrs Doubtfire experience.
